One major emphasis of the CCSSM is that of teaching for conceptual understanding. While many teachers are skilled at demonstrating or modeling a procedure for students to replicate, they need training to increase their math content knowledge and learn more about effective teaching strategies for teaching for conceptual understanding. It not only takes time for training, but it often requires funding that districts simply do not have.
Despite deep budget cuts, there are still ways to provide opportunities for teachers to learn mathematics content and effective ways for teaching mathematics. Many schools are using professional learning communities within their schools or buildings as a vehicle for empowering teachers to learn even in the midst of funding cuts. But these resources can also be used by individual teachers as well.
Here are 3 free resources that I’ve selected from the full list included in our free downloadable Field Guide for CCSSM Implementation that provide a variety of teaching videos and materials that help clarify the standards and model effective strategies for implementing the mathematical practices in teaching for conceptual understanding.
- The Teaching Channel is a video showcase of innovative and effective teaching practices in America’s schools. Also, their Lesson Plans Hub provides teachers with a thorough, up-to-date, and user-friendly resource for online lesson plan templates. It's also completely free for anyone to use!
- Foundational documents for the CCSSM, the Progressions Documents for the Common Core Math Standards are narrative documents informed by educational research and the structure of mathematics, that describe the progression of a topic across a number of grade levels.
- Illustrative Mathematicsis a discerning community of educators directed by Dr. Bill McCallum, one of the lead authors for the CCSSM. Illustrative Mathematics includes example of vetted problems that serve in illustrating the CCSSM.
