My name is Ben Nail, and I have been a high school math teacher at Lebanon High School in Lebanon, MO for 15 years. In that time I have taught nearly all of the math classes we offer (applied algebra, geometry, algebra 2, intermediate algebra, trigonometry, and math analysis). I also teach math classes for Ozark Technical Community College, and I have been a part of the Missouri Math Academy.
Throughout my many years of experience I have met and worked with some of the best math minds around. I love math and teaching math. I am a very logical person and love to solve puzzles. To me math is all about solving the puzzle.
Tests and Triumphs of the Classroom
My biggest challenge as a teacher is trying to help everyone. With the number of students and limited time in the classroom it is a constant effort to make sure the students are maximizing their achievement.
My biggest success as a teacher is seeing kids go on after high school. I love to hear back from kids who have gone on to do amazing things and they will tell me something I did along the way to give them a push or a help. It is a great feeling to know you helped someone believe in themselves or gave them a tool to be successful down the road.
Challenges and Successes at LearnBop
As a LearnBop author my biggest challenge is keeping up with the number of standards. Missouri has a huge number of standards we are held accountable for, and it can be a difficult task to keep up with them.
My biggest success as Learnbop author is every time I complete a Bop. I know these are being used across the state to better prepare a number of students. I am excited to know I am helping students across the state, across the entire US, and even around the world (I understand we’re now working with schools in India and Singapore), and not just in my classroom.
