I’ve known and worked with many school administrators throughout my career and I’ve found one thing you all have in common. You are always looking for the biggest returns on your investments in student learning.
These are particularly challenging times as you continue to deal with the lingering effects of the 2007 – 2009 recession and the resulting budget cuts. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities reported last fall (Figure 1) that 34 states are providing less funding per student this school year than before the recession. Most schools can’t make up the differences and are forced to make serious budget cuts.
Due to increases in operational costs and required programs, many of the budget cuts limit the funds available for education reform efforts such as the following which would improve schools:
- Recruiting, developing, and retaining high quality teachers
- Decreasing class size
- Extended learning programs
- Providing quality instructional resources and materials
Schools need to produce workers with the skills to master new technologies and adapt to the growing complexities of a global economy. It should be a time for increasing school funding and improving the quality of elementary and high schools. But instead, it’s a time of deep education cuts that are likely to result in greater costs to our country in diminished economic growth. Now, more than ever, it’s important to spend your limited funds judiciously and wisely.
