On Thursday, Stephen Colbert announced that he's going to fund every single grant request South Carolina teachers made on the crowdfunding website Donorschose.org.
What a way to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week!
There were almost 1,000 requestes from 375 SC schools, totaling $800,000.
How did he make the announcement?
While in New York at a funding conference hosted by education crowdfunding site DonorsChoose.org, Stephen Colbert embraced educational technologies for a very special announcement for South Carolina School’s and their teachers. The comedian and talk show host was on a live video feed with the students from Alexander Elementary School. Colbert, a product of the South Carolina public education system, showed his appreciation by announcing that he would be giving back to the school system that produced him. Colbert, ScanSource and Share Fair Nation are, funding all the DonorsChoose.org campaigns for teachers in South Carolina.
"Using the proceeds of the sale of my old set on The Colbert Report which we auctioned off, and with the generous matching funds from The Morgridge Family Foundation and ScanSource, DonorsChoose is going to flash-fund all 1,000 projects in South Carolina," Colbert said.
South Carolina Superintendent Molly Spearman noted, "This is Teacher Appreciation Week, so what a great way to say, 'thank you teachers for what you're doing every day.'"
The Power of Community
Alexander Elementary has utilized DonorsChoose, receiving over $100,000 in grants earlier this year. This in turn has promoted DonorsChoose.org across South Carolina. The reason for their success is perhaps due to Principal Sonya Campbell who asked each teacher to write at least one grant request this year, now everyone has been funded. None more so than Damon Qualls, who has had 126 projects funded through DonorsChoose, and stood next to Colbert during the announcement.
Teachers began opening boxes filled with things they needed to enrich students’ lives including: books, motivational posters, headphones, dodgeballs, bulletin boards and other goodies for their classrooms.
These gifts from Colbert, Share Fair Nation, ScanSource, and DonorsChoose represent a meaningful token of appreciation for more than 800 teachers at 375 schools. According to greenvilleonline.com, “Since 2005, 13,000 South Carolina projects worth more than $5.6 million have been funded through DonorsChoose.org.”
