Introduction

Hello! My name is Stephanie Long. I have been in education now for 19 years. I spent the first 17 years of my career in an 8th grade classroom teaching students about Math, Algebra, and Media Literacy.

I have been very fortunate over the years to spend an extensive amount of time in high quality professional learning that has stretched me as an educator and helped me to provide a fun and engaging environment for my students. In addition, I had the opportunity to become a certified eMints teacher in the state of Missouri, which focuses on a Constructivist approach to learning with technology integration. This training really taught me how to use technology and inquiry-based learning to pull my students deeper into the content and also provide a collaborative classroom environment. A few years ago I completed my master’s degree in History, which might seem odd given that I have always taught math, but I love history and I love to learn new things! I know this is why I chose to become an educator. My love for learning and working with kids just seemed a natural fit.

Introduction

My name is Ben Nail, and I have been a high school math teacher at Lebanon High School in Lebanon, MO for 15 years. In that time I have taught nearly all of the math classes we offer (applied algebra, geometry, algebra 2, intermediate algebra, trigonometry, and math analysis). I also teach math classes for Ozark Technical Community College, and I have been a part of the Missouri Math Academy.

Throughout my many years of experience I have met and worked with some of the best math minds around. I love math and teaching math. I am a very logical person and love to solve puzzles. To me math is all about solving the puzzle.

Introduction

I grew up in an education-rich family. My mother began a preschool in our home when I was four. Her passion for developmentally-appropriate practices and an inquiry-based approach to learning influences my practices to this day. My father was a university math professor and department chair, fueling my mathematical curiosity. My second grade and middle school math teachers also provided the push needed for me to pursue mathematics as a life-long career, a career with middle grades students which began 20 years ago at Knob Noster Middle School, located in the small rural town of Knob Noster, Missouri.

Introduction

When I graduated high school, I swore I would never be a teacher. But here I am seventeen years later, and I would not consider any other profession.

When I was in my first semester of college I changed my major from Accounting to Secondary Mathematics Education. My decision was made for many different reasons. One, I wanted a family one day and thought that a teacher would have summers off and be able to spend time raising a family.  (Notice I used the word “thought”.) Even though summers are spent preparing for the next school year and recovering from the previous, I do get more time with my children than moms in other professions.
